Footnotes/Endnotes

To enter a footnote or endnote, place your cursor where you want to add the footnote and click on the Insert Footnote icon. A box will pop up. Put your cursor inside the box and type your footnote, then click anywhere outside the box to insert your footnote.

Inkwell automatically adds the numbering and reorders any other footnotes if applicable.

To edit a footnote, click on the footnote number in the body text. The pop-up editing window will appear. Make your changes inside the text box.

To delete a footnote altogether, place your cursor in the body text immediately before the footnote number. Use your delete key to delete the footnote number reference. Likewise, you can place your cursor immediately after the footnote reference number and use your backspace key to delete the footnote.

To access Project Settings for Footnotes/Endnotes, click on Notes. Here you can choose:

  • Placement: Where footnotes are placed, including three options:

    • Footnote: at the bottom of the page

    • Chapter Endnote: at the end of the chapter

    • Book Endnote: In a separate section or chapter at the end of the book or article

  • Numbered By: Numbering can restart with each chapter, or continue through the entire book

  • Numbering: Displays the numbering format, which includes:

    • Numeric (1)

    • Alphabetic (a)

    • Roman Lowercase (i)

    • Roman Uppercase (I)

    • Greek (α)

    • Star and Dagger (*)

    • English Words (One)

  • Name: Title of your choosing for an Endnotes section.

  • Indent: Amount of whitespace indenting each footnote

  • Body Indent: Amount of whitespace between the footnote number and the footnote text

  • Spacing: Amount of line spacing between footnotes

  • Top and Bottom Margin: Amount of extra whitespace before and after the footnote section

The Format section provides the same settings as a paragraph and determines the format of the content of the footnote.

Endnotes

There is no difference in the way that endnotes are inserted into a book or article, however, to view the endnotes, you must first insert a “Notes” section.

Navigate to the Chapters view along the left menu bar.

Click on the Insert button at the bottom of the Chapters List, then click Notes.

Inkwell will automatically configure your Notes section based on the settings that you have already defined. You’ll be able to edit the notes directly when the notes section is open in the editor.
