Local Settings

Local Settings on the left rail changes whatever is selected right now, overriding the project-wide default for that one thing.

The panel is context-sensitive: put the cursor in a paragraph and you get paragraph settings; select a table cell and you get cell settings. If nothing looks relevant, check what you have actually selected.

Overrides, defaults, and Reset

Every setting here starts out inheriting from Project Settings. Changing one makes it a local override for this element only.

Two affordances go with that:

• A Reset button appears beside any setting you have overridden. It drops the override and returns the element to the project default, showing that default next to the button so you can see what you are reverting to.
• Each section links through to the corresponding section of Project Settings, so if you find yourself making the same override repeatedly you can go and change the default instead. That is usually the right move — local overrides are for exceptions.

Chapter

Selected when the cursor is in a chapter but not in anything more specific:

• Scratch — exclude this chapter from the built book. It stays in the project as a scratchpad and is marked in the chapter list.
• Part — make this chapter a part divider rather than a chapter.
• Boilerplate — mark it as template-supplied.
• Preserve in Template — keep it when the template changes.
• Custom Number — override the automatic chapter number, for appendices and the like.
• Navigation Label — a shorter title for the chapter list, when the real title is long.

Paragraph

The most-used section. Available for paragraphs, headings, blockquotes, lists, and display math:

• Alignment — left, right, centred, or fully justified.
• Font, Font Size, Line Height — increase line height for double spacing.
• Bold and Italic — applied to the whole paragraph.
• Indent — indent the first line.
• Hanging Indent — indent every line except the first.
• Top Margin / Bottom Margin — space before and after this paragraph.
• Top Group Margin / Bottom Group Margin — space before and after a run of consecutive paragraphs sharing the style, rather than around each one.
• Inset — narrow the paragraph, adding space on both sides.
• Keep With Next — prevent a page break between this paragraph and the one after, which is how you stop a heading being stranded at the foot of a page.

Headings

Headings get the paragraph settings above plus their own numbering options, labelled by level so you can see which one you are changing.

Tables

Selecting inside a table offers four separate sections:

• Table Row, Table Column, and Table Cell — borders and vertical alignment at each level.
• Table — the style preset, plus Borders (all cells) and Shading (all cells) for changing the whole table at once.

Equation

Numbered — whether this particular equation gets a number, regardless of the project default.

Image and Figure

For an inline image, a Size setting.

For a figure:

• Width — as a percentage of the text width.
• Bleed — let the figure run into the margin, off the page edge, onto a page of its own, or across a two-page spread.
• Hide caption and Hide label — suppress the caption text or the "Figure 3" label.
• Caption Position — above or below.
• Automatic Placement — let Inkwell move the figure to where it fits best, rather than pinning it exactly where it sits in the text. This is also what decides where a two-page spread lands.

Cropping, rotating and flipping are not here — they live on the toolbar that appears when a picture is selected. See Cropping.

Lists

Ordered List and Bullet List sections carry the numbering format, markers, and alignment for the selected list.

Text

With text selected — rather than just a cursor in it — a Text section appears with the full font panel, applying to the selection only. This is the escape hatch for one-off character formatting that no style covers.
